Former Pope Benedict XVI dies aged 95

Former Pope Benedict XVI has died at the age of 95, nearly a decade after stepping down due to ill health.

He led the Catholic Church for less than eight years before becoming the first Pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415 in 2013.

Benedict spent his final years at the Mater Ecclesiae monastery within the Vatican walls, where he died on Saturday at 09:34 (08:34 GMT).

“With sorrow, I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican,” Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said in a statement.

On January 5, his successor, Pope Francis, will officiate at the funeral.
