Senate delays passage of 2023 budget

The Senate has moved up the deadline for passing the 2023 budget to December 28, 2022.

The lawmakers also delayed the Finance Bill’s passage until December 28.

These announcements were made by Senate President Ahmad Lawan during plenary on Thursday.

He clarified that the Senate is delaying the budget’s passage due to some difficulties in receiving the appropriations committee’s report on the 2023 budget.

The reason for this, he added, is that the appropriations bill came to the National Assembly from the executive with some problems, and when the committee came to reconcile the figures, the challenge became obvious and difficult to deal with.

Senator Lawan added that the Senate Appropriations Committee kicked off a process of cleaning up the 2023 budget first and engaged the executive in the cleanup exercise.

However, the process was concluded on Wednesday, December 21st, and the committee couldn’t conclude putting together the report for submission on Thursday.
