Moscow: One killed in shopping center’s fire

One person has lost his life in a huge, football-field-sized fire that broke out overnight in a big shopping and entertainment complex in a northern Moscow suburb on Friday.

“In the Moscow region, firefighters are putting out a fire the size of 7,000 square metres (75,300 square feet),” Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations said on Telegram.

The Mega Khimki shopping center fire, which occurred around seven kilometers (four miles) from Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport, was later reported to have claimed one life by Russian media.

Twenty fire engines and more than 70 firefighters were working at the scene, according to emergency services, who also noted that the building’s design was hindering their efforts.

While state news media later cited sources who said that safety issues were more likely to be the cause, Russian news agencies initially quoted emergency services sources as claiming that “arson” was suspected.
