Chicago art college revokes Kanye West’s honorary doctorate

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago has revoked Kanye West’s honorary doctorate.

Ye’s degree was revoked due to his recent antisemitic and racist utterances, according to a statement released by the school’s president, Elissa Tenny, on Thursday.

“Ye’s actions do not align with SAIC’s mission and values, and we’ve rescinded his honorary degree,” Tenny said.

Ye obtained an honorary degree in 2015 in recognition of his then-current artistic achievements.

But following Ye’s alleged workplace misconduct, antisemitic tweets, and racist tirades, several SAIC students initiated a Change.org petition to have Tenny’s degree revoked—something that had never happened since the school was founded.

The petition reads in part: “This harm impacts the artists, designers and scholars affiliated to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and their values of justice, compassion, and free expression without hatred.”

The petition, which attracted over 4,000 signatures, criticized the honorary degree for giving Ye status at a time when his remarks were hurtful to Jews and other people.
